Eduardo Verastegui, Producer and Actor, Endorses McCain-Palin Campaign

LOS ANGELES, October 28 /Christian Newswire/ -- Jon Voight, Dennis Miller and Norm Macdonald aren't the only entertainers who voiced support of John McCain for president. Eduardo Verastegui, the producer and lead actor of the award- winning film Bella, announced his endorsement at a Colorado McCain-Palin rally on October 15.

Reaching out to Latino voters, Verastegui says, "I am endorsing John McCain for president because of his commitments to end abortion, protect traditional marriage and reform immigration fairly."

Verastegui joined Senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Mel Martinez, as well as former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Governor Charlie Crist, at the Miami McCain-Palin rally on October 17.

He reminded the crowd that more than 45 million babies have been killed by abortion in America since the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.

Verastegui said, "We need to put an end to abortion and political candidates play a very important role in this matter. More than 200,000 Latino babies are killed by abortion each year in the USA. This holocaust must end. That's why we must elect John McCain. He will defend and protect the most innocent of his country, the beautiful babies in their mothers' wombs."

After the rally, Verastegui met with McCain, saying, "Senator, thank you for your commitment to life. I'd like to give you something. Here is a Miraculous Medal blessed by Pope Benedict XVI."

John McCain promises to do this and it is crucial since we are just one Supreme Court justice away from overturning Roe v. Wade.

It would strip Americans of their right to protect innocent human lives, even from the savagery of partial-birth abortion, during which the abortionist pulls a baby from his mother's womb, stabs his skull and vacuums out his brains."

Obama also promised marriage rights for same- sex unions, so Verastegui emphasizes McCain's commitment to protect traditional marriage laws.

The location will be at 1804 Alabama Avenue SE in Washington, D.C.

The group contends the DC Housing Authority is misinterpreting the Welfare Reform Act and applying it in an unjust manner.

The housing advocates also maintain that many are being forced to leave so the city can sell these units at a significant profit.

Pro-Life Activists Arrested at College of Alameda

ALAMEDA, Calif., October 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- Three college-age members of the Survivors Campus Life Tour were unlawfully arrested yesterday at the College of Alameda, California, while handing out literature on the public campus. They have been in custody for over 12 hours.

From the time of their arrival on campus the group quietly held signs, distributed literature and peacefully dialogued with students. After a security guard attempted to dispel a group of curious onlookers, the group was told to leave and threatened with arrest by the sheriff's department.

When the members of Campus Life Tour refused to stop their free speech activity and leave the public school property, the three activists handing out literature to students were handcuffed and arrested. They were charged with causing a disturbance, although the police professed on videotape that the group was not yelling, shouting, blocking the walkways, or preventing students from getting to class.

Kortney Blythe, director of Campus Life Tours for Survivors states, "My team members are in jail for peacefully exercising their free speech rights. It is a travesty that these Alameda officers put these heroes in handcuffs claiming they were just 'following orders'. Sounds familiar. When the individuals being arrested repeatedly asked why they were being taken into custody the sheriff's deputy responded that he was just doing what the school principal asked.

Indeed, all those who support children and families and their fundamental right to security should reject Leviev for his direct involvement in crimes against Palestinians.

We are disturbed to see today's call by the Anti-Defamation League for UNICEF to resume a financial relationship with Lev Leviev. We hope that UNICEF will continue to reject funding from untoward sources and strongly disagree with the ADL's accusation that UNICEF is discriminatory. We challenge the ADL to defend Leviev's business dealings (settlement growth, land expropriation) as actions that improve the lives of all children. UNICEF's decision to cease accepting money from the man responsible for the construction of illegal Israeli settlements on the land of villages under military occupation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is nothing less than an assertion that human rights and international law are universal. Leviev, one of the richest men in Israel, has a long history of involvement in human rights abuses. He made his fortune doing business with the diamond mines of apartheid-era South Africa(1), and has continued his involvement with this bloodiest of trades in partnership with the Angolan government, which is presently attempting to expel the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights so it can more easily fix an election(2). Leviev is a longtime funder of the Land Redemption Fund(3), an arm of the Israeli far right settlers' movement Gush Emunim, known for its use of deceit and intimidation to illegally acquire the land of Palestinian villages, as well as a settlement builder himself. His Danya Cebus company has been active in Mattityahu East(4), Maale Adumim and Har Homa settlements(5), while another subsidiary, Leader, is building Zufim settlement(6). Residents of the villages whose land is being stolen to build the first and last of these, Bil'in and Jayyous, have reported new settlement expansion in process in the past month.

UNICEF made its determination after several months of 'due diligence' investigation of Leviev's business and political activities, in response to concerns raised by human rights groups. Their research included a formal visit to Palestinian villages whose land has been illegally seized for Leviev's projects. These villages include Bil'in, where attacks by Israeli soldiers on weekly nonviolent demonstrations against land theft have injured over 1,000 people over the past three and a half years, including around 300 children, and Jayyous, which submitted the following statement to UNICEF (7) to make clear just how deep the effects of Leviev's settlement building have been on the children of these communities:

"More than 70% of Jayyous' farmers are now denied access to their land, which in many cases happens to be the very area where Leader plans to expand Zufim. As a result, our once-prosperous farming village of 3,400 hundred souls, which once provided food for 60,000 Palestinians, is now impoverished and dependent on external food aid. 57% of Jayyous' families now depend on food aid... [while] 70% of families, are in great need of food aid, and this number is constantly increasing.

Leviev's settlement and Israel's wall have impoverished our village to such a degree that 103 out of a total of 195 students in grades 7-12 were compelled to drop out of school. [Students'] dreams of attending universities now seem impossible. In 2002, before Israel began construction on the wall, 180 high school graduates from Jayyous were enrolled in university studies. That number has now dropped to 50. We understand that Leviev contributes to fundraising events in France benefitting UNICEF programs to educate girls in Senegal. We ask why UNICEF, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children worldwide would accept Leviev's support in educating Senegalese children while his companies are destroying the lives of Palestinian children in places like Jayyous?"

Nowhere in its statement does the ADL dispute UNICEF's findings in relation to Lev Leviev. It merely claims that they should be overlooked, that looking at this record is "arbitrary, unnecessary and discriminatory". The organization's rush to leap to the defense of a documented violator of human rights and international law would be laughable if it did not involve the lives and livelihoods of entire communities. The ADL's insistence that an exception be made for Lev Leviev - that Palestinians should not be considered humans with rights worth respecting – is appalling. For it to do so for no reason other than Leviev's Israeli citizenship and Jewish identity lends ammunition to those who foment anti-Jewish prejudice and violence by claiming that Jewish organizations care only about defending 'their own'.

No organization which claims to speak for justice can justify accepting financial support from those who violate human rights. This applies no less to private NGOs like the ADL than to international agencies like UNICEF. We call on the Anti-Defamation League to live up to its charter and follow the lead of UNICEF and Oxfam (8) in severing any financial ties it may have to Lev Leviev and his corporate arms, as well as his fellow violators of international law and human rights.

Eyewitness Dale Weldy, a volunteer for the Kansas Coalition for Life, reported that a woman with an IV was loaded into Sedgwick County ambulance number 30 and transported away from the abortion clinic at approximately 8:05 AM. According to Weldy, the ambulance never used its lights or siren.

Cheryl Sullenger of Operation Rescue was notified and arrived at Wesley Medical Center in time to photograph the same ambulance that Weldy saw leave Tiller's abortion clinic. In addition, she was able take photos of Tiller's personal Jeep parked in the emergency room parking lot.

Tiller was joined at the emergency room by his employee, Diane Warren, who noticed Sullenger and called out to her, "You're dying to know, aren't you!"

In addition to Tiller, abortionist Susan Robinson, a part-time Tiller employee from Ukiah, California, was on the schedule and may have been involved in the botched abortion. The condition of the abortion patient is unknown.

This was the third emergency transport documented by Operation Rescue in the last five weeks. Patient S. told her horrific story of her near-death botched abortion experience to Operation Rescue from her hospital bed on September 27. Another ambulance was seen at Tiller's infamous late-term abortion mill on October 2, 2008.

"Again and again, we have documented case after case of botched abortions that have landed women in the hospital - or worse, as in the case of Christin Gilbert, who died from a botched third- trimester abortion at Tiller's mill in 2005," said Sullenger. ALAMEDA, Calif., October 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- After spending nearly twelve hours in jail, three college-age members of Campus Life Tour were released at midnight tired, hungry, and glad to have their freedom back. The group was unlawfully arrested yesterday at the College of Alameda, California, while handing out literature on the public campus. Campus Life Tour is a pro-life campus outreach project of Survivors, a Christian, pro- life activism organization dedicated to educating and activating high school and college age individuals. Upon arriving on campus the group quietly held signs, distributed literature and peacefully dialogued with students. Within moments of their arrival, a campus security guard attempted to dispel a group of curious onlookers ushering them away from the displays. The Alameda Sheriff's Department was called and instructed the group to leave, threatening them with arrest.

When the members of Campus Life Tour refused to stop their lawful free speech activity and leave the public school property, the three activists handing out literature to students were handcuffed and arrested.

The White House's request came days after the U.S. Supreme Court denied an attempt by Ohio Republicans to challenge voters with discrepancies between the information on their registration forms and other government databases. There is considerable evidence showing these databases are fraught with errors that could lead to the wrongful disfranchisement of thousands of lawful voters.

In addition, challenging – or purging – lawfully registered voters in the days before an election invites chaos and undermines the integrity of the democratic process," said the letter signed by ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero and Washington Legislative Office Director Caroline Fredrickson. "Despite the lack of any credible evidence of voter fraud, the White House continues to pursue this probe. If this purge goes forward, lawfully registered voters could be removed from the rolls as a result of typos or other innocent discrepancies."

Last Friday, at the urging of Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner, the White House requested the Department of Justice investigate whether 200,000 newly registered Ohio voters must reconfirm their registration before November 4. However, the databases that would be used to compare the new voter lists are riddled with errors and could lead to massive disfranchisement solely due to typos or other data-entry mistakes.

The removal of voters based upon mismatched information at this late date would violate other federal statutes and constitutional provisions governing federal elections, including the National Voter Registration Act and the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution.

"The Department of Justice has a responsibility to uphold the law and protect civil rights. We strongly urge you to reject this request from the White House," said the letter.
