ATLANTA, Sept. 9 /Christian Newswire/ -- Gospel Music Channel (GMC) today announced a series of summer cable system launches that has added more than a quarter million subscribers to its expanding universe. These launches are the most recent in an acceleration of distribution gains that have driven GMC from nine million homes to more than 40 million in the past 16 months.
Comcast system launches include Northern Virginia (Arlington, Alexandria, Prince William County and Reston), Maryland (City of Annapolis, Baltimore County, Harford County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Charles County and Calvert County) and Alabama (Huntsville). Other recent launches include Knology systems in Panama City and Pinellas County in Florida, Hargray CATV in Beaufort, SC; One Link in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and MetroCast Communications in Mississippi (Pontotoc, Oxford, New Albany, Ashland, Iuka and Amory) and Alabama (Red Bay).
These launches mean that local customers gain GMC as the network celebrates the first-ever National Gospel Music Heritage Month across multiple platforms this September. Gospel Music Channel has teamed with Senators, Members of Congress, The Recording Academy® and the Gospel Music Association to launch the new initiative. The dual legislation in the House of Representatives and the Senate designates September 2008 as Gospel Music Heritage Month, honoring gospel music for its valuable long-standing contributions to American culture. The initiative was created by GMC, the country's first and only 24/7 television network devoted to all forms of Gospel/Christian music.
Gospel Music Channel is celebrating on-air, online and on-demand by featuring the greatest names ever in gospel music throughout the month. Mahalia Jackson, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Amy Grant, Al Green, Dixie Hummingbirds, Kirk Franklin, Michael W. Smith, Bobby Jones, Natalie Grant, Bill Gaither and many other greats are being showcased in GMC world and network premieres, documentaries, original specials and series.
Gospel Music Heritage Month honors a true American art form for its vast contributions to our culture, bringing a message of hope and inspiration to people of all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. People are encouraged to celebrate Gospel Music Heritage Month by attending concerts, events, watching and listening to gospel music, learning and reading about gospel music and more.
