CMDA Recognizes National Healthcare Decision Day

CMDA Recognizes National Healthcare Decision Day

Bristol, TN/April 14, 2008/3mnewswire.org/ -- The largest faith-based organization of physicians and dentists, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA) recognizes the importance of National Healthcare Decision Day for patients, which will be held on April 16, 2008. The purpose of National Healthcare Decisions Day is to encourage patients to let their health team know their wishes concerning end of life care.

“We highly recommend people to create a power of attorney for healthcare,” said David Stevens, the Chief Executive Officer of The Christian Medical & Dental Associations. “It gives someone they trust and who shares their worldview the power to make their health decisions when they no longer can themselves. On this day we all should be reminded that at the end of life pain can almost always be controlled, people have a choice to refuse treatment they don’t want, and in almost all areas of the country hospice care can provide the comfort care they desire.

With ongoing attempts to legalize physician assisted suicide (PAS) in WA and CA, good end-of-life care is at risk. PAS completely blurs the line between healer and killer for the physician involved. Having an Advanced Directive eliminates the chance of making the wrong end-of-life choice.

Everyone is encouraged to complete an Advanced Directive and to let their physician know of its existence. Advance Directives are state-specific, so be sure to learn about your state’s regulations before filling one out.
